RVing at NASCAR Races

NASCAR and RVing are a natural fit; in part because it’s how the drivers travel and relax at the races.  What fan hasn’t gazed longingly at Dale’s motor coach or wished for a peak inside the great Jeff Gordon’s RV?

One of our dealerships was not far from Phoenix International Raceway (PIR) and twice a year our entire fleet of RV rentals were spoken for and rented for those weekends at the Men's Phoenix International Raceway Teal Sunset T-Shirttrack.  Plus we had many customers who purchased RV’s so that they could travel the NASCAR circuit in their RV.

Zoomtown USA (the campground at PIR) like many of the NASCAR track become mini-cities during race week.  We always enjoyed seeing the city grow out of the desert as we delivered RVs throughout the week.  In addition to having fun – the campers were prepared! So let’s discuss how to prepare for camping at the track.

Book Your NASCAR Tickets and RV Spot

TRVs at NASCARhe first thing to consider is which race will you attend.  Every NASCAR track is different in terms of race and camping.  Secure your tickets early for best seats and camping spots.  Many of the regulars will have the same spots year after year. Here is a list of the 2017 Cup Series Races

Be sure to ask about hook ups.  Because much of the RV parking is open fields, you will likely be without services (water/electricity/dumping) for the duration of your stay.  If you will be using a generator be sure to find out the policies at the track (quiet hours, etc.)

Organize Your Gear

Now then, I am a list maker (watch for future posts) and because once you are in you aren’t going to want to go out, plan well.  I know that at PIR there is an on-site RV Store with camping items; but be sure you know ahead of time what you will need to bring.  Some easily forgotten necessary items: Lighter, Flash Light, RV Toilet Paper, Cleaning Supplies, and Trash Bags.

Then there is the fun stuff.  Flying the flag of your favorite driver is a great way to meet people.  Outdoor furniture is a must.  How about a satellite so that you can pick TV from the campsite?  Of course be sure to have all of your fan gear in tow as well. Check out NASCAR.com SuperStore

Of course don’t forget linens (bed and bath), an outdoor carpet, and personal items.  I could go on and on…but you get the idea.

Plan Your Meals

Will you grill? Use the microwave?  Eat Fan Food? Cook inside? Most likely it will be some combination thereof.  But planning ahead will save you time, money, and frustration.  Depending on the size of your refrigerator, you might want to bring an extra ice chest.  Paper products are great to limit clean up. And don’t forget the charcoal!

Time to Leave

Race is over and its time to break camp and head home or to your next destination.  Be sure that you fully understand the rules surrounding clearing your campsite.  Be responsible with your trash (we have

found that race fans are really very responsible people).  Allow ample time to exit the area as there may be traffic getting out.

One final word – a tidbit from our recent vacation.  If you go to Talledega, be sure to visit the International Motorsports Hall of Fame – totally worth it.  And if you visit the track not during a race, you can actually take a drive around the track.  One of the best times we had!
