5 Outdoor Products to Have on Hand for Summer RVing

Summer is around the corner which means vacations, time by the pool, and of course RVing!  With the warm sunshine is starting to peek through your window, you’ve probably started making your summer RV plans.  And of course that includes enjoying the great outdoors.

But don’t get started without being prepared for what else the warmer season brings. Here are 5 outdoor products for RVing you should keep on hand for a safe and enjoyable summer vacation.

1. Sunscreen

You should always wear sunscreen on the exposed parts of your body – including your hands – every time you head outdoors. First, try to about 15 minutes prior to sun exposure, and then reapply every two hours after.

2. Aloe Vera or Other Sunburn Remedy
In case you miss a spot while applying sunscreen – or simply forget to put it on – keep a sunburn soother, like aloe vera, on hand for light sunburns. Do not use these lotions if your skin blisters, as this could lead to infection. More serious burns may need a doctor’s attention.

3. Insect Repellent
Did you know that light-colored clothing is best to repel insects? It is less appealing to insects that bite and you can also more easily spot insects on you. Insect repellents that contain DEET, indalone, Rutgers 612 or DMP are also good protection against bites, particularly in heavily wooded areas.

4. Antihistamine or Anti-itching Cream
Oral antihistamines and topical anti-itching creams can be a lifesaver. Whether it is a bug bite or poison ivy, people have different responses to these situations. Sometimes, they trigger life-threatening emergencies if the person is highly allergic and has breathing problems. In that case, call 911. But in most cases, keeping these products on-hand should do the trick.

5. Emergency Kit
You can buy fully stocked first-aid kits at the pharmacy or make your own. Be sure to include:

    • Antibiotic ointment
    • Antiseptic solution
    • Bandage strips and bandages
    • Instant cold packs
    • Gauze pads
    • Soap or hand sanitizer
    • Sterile eye wash
    • Thermometer
    • A healthy, filling snack

6. Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is important all year, but especially if you’re getting outdoors and more active. Drinking plenty of water is especially great as the seasons and weather changes. An insulated water bottle or drink cup, like a Yeti, will keep your water cold and refreshing.  Remember: when you’re feeling thirsty, drink.

Other products to have, especially when you are traveling, include: facial tissues, anti-diarrhea medication, aspirin or other pain relievers, and hydrocortisone cream. It’s also a good idea to keep a first-aid manual on hand.
