RV Spare Tire – Care for Your Spare

The RV spare tire.  All RVs should have them;  but do we ever check to see the following:

  • Location – is it mounted under the RV? On the tongue of the trailer, or on the rear bumper
  • Ease of Access – How easy it will be to access when we need it.  Do you need special tools, etc?
  • Condition – age, tread depth, damage, etc.
  • Air Pressure – be sure that it is properly inflated – a flat spare tire is of no use to you
  • Age and condition of the valve stem
  • Jack – is there one in the RV and where is it located?

Where is Your Spare?

Sadly many of the RV’ spare tires are mounted in areas where, while they can easily be accessed,  it puts them out in the elements with all the tires that are being utilized.  Thus exposing them to heat, cold, and potential road damage.  These externally mounted tires are also susceptible to theft so there is a safety concern there as well.

Rear or bumper mounted spares are most common and recognizable because of the spare tire cover that usually accompanies them.  The cover is a good protector for the tire.

Some manufacturers mount the spare tire under the RV.  This is a hard to access, bracketed area that can be very difficult to get to when you need it. However, this option does add to the security of the tire and exposure to the elements. (Note: in our rental business, we did see under mounted spares ruined from road hazards and the renter was completely unaware – good reminder to always check your spare!)

Many trailers will have the tire mounted on the tongue.  Which does make for easy access and inspection, but it also has the same exposure and safety issues of a bumper or rear mounted spare.

Finally, some RVs to not have a spare!  We have seen this primarily in the larger Class A motor homes.  So much space is taken up for storage and extras that the spare has been eliminated.  Don’t assume that you have a spare.
